ELEMENT URBAN VILLAGE /

Location: Saskatoon, SK Date: 2016

On the banks of the South Saskatchewan river in the Riversdale neighbourhood of Saskatoon, these townhouses give nods to vernacular construction and iconic prairie design. On a site historically used as a train yard in early Saskatoon, the design refers to the grain elevators and outbuildings constructed in the 1900s. The blonde cedar-clad gabled facades have been slightly angled to match the turn in the river, giving each unit direct views of the water. Making use of brick, cedar, aluminum and extensive glass, the three storey units create naturally beautiful dwellings with lofty views and purposeful thresholds between public and private living.

PRISM COFFEE /

Location: Saskatoon SK

Located on the main floor of the Two Twenty Coworking building in Saskatoon, PRISM Coffee is a hub for the community. The recent renovation has provided a fresh experience for both the coworking members and the people of the neighbourhood.

The existing south glazing brings in plenty of daylighting which we augmented by utilizing cream coloured tiles, white Corian counters, and white oak textured melamine millwork to create a bright and friendly interior. Working with the graphic design colours we featured yellow ochre with white oak slats on the ceiling cloud over the service area. The coffee bar is large and central with plenty of circulation between the front oak window ledge and the rear seating area. A long grey upholstered banquette with movable tables and chairs sits comfortably beneath the flora mural. Casual and visually light furniture complement the banquette and mural and offer flexibility in the layout. Overall the effect is spacious and warm; a perfect spot for a coffee date.

ODD COUPLE RESTAURANT /

location: 226 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK

Odd Couple is a modern Chinese award-winning restaurant run by the Yuen family, originally from Hong Kong. The design program for the space began with references to the film “In the Mood for Love” by Chinese director Wong Kar-wai. The rich textures and patterns from the 1960s British Hong Kong film set the tone for the design. The overhead door and exposed cinderblock wall create the feeling of eating outside, much like the Dai Pa Dong’s (open-air eating) of Andy Yuen’s youth. The mahogany wood screens, Bocci lights, walnut veneer bar and textured wallpaper come together to create a rich environment in which to enjoy the aromatic dishes from the talented chefs.

MONARCH /

Location: 536 2nd Avenue North, Saskatoon SK

The Monarch is located in the northern part of downtown Saskatoon, where many red brick warehouses once stood. Using this style as inspiration, we set out to achieve their same scale and texture. The result reintroduced the neighbourhood to the character these buildings once brought to the city’s core. The angled site of this 1909m2 building required a creative solution to ensure individual storefronts along the side street. By stepping the facade backward along this angle, we were able to achieve a unique building form with extra wide sidewalks and patio areas for each tenant. The red brick facade is complimented with black metal windows and limestone features, including a custom cornerstone street name block
